Written and directed by students at the Environmental Charter High School of Lawndale (ECHS), "A Day in the Life" follows a family of four on their daily journey through life, commenting on their actions, while offering cool facts and green solutions, listed below. Enjoy! FACT: A treadmill uses 1500 watts & pumps out 2 pounds of carbon dioxide in just 30 minutes! SOLUTION: Exercise outside as often as possible! FACT: Running the water while brushing your teeth can waste 3 gallons a day. SOLUTION: Challenge yourself to brush using one cup of water. FACT: Long showers can waste 700 gallons per person per month. SOLUTION: Limit showers to the length of your favorite song. FACT: Everything we throw away ends up in a landfill where the toxins pollute our groundwater. FACT: Over 75% of what we “throw away” could be recycled or reused. SOLUTION: Use reusable containers. FACT: Toxic chemicals cause illness. SOLUTION: Shop for safe products or make your own. FACT: Incandescent bulbs use 75% more energy than compact fluorescent bulbs. SOLUTION: Conserve energy by using fluorescent bulbs. FACT: Food waste increases food costs & depletes natural resources. SOLUTION: Start composting your food waste & separate recyclables from garbage. FACT: Paper manufacturing is the third largest user of fossil fuels. SOLUTION: Use spell check to save time and resources. FACT: Wasting paper wastes money ….. and trees. SOLUTION: Use both sides of the page before recycling. FACT: Individual packaging creates excessive waste. SOLUTION: Buy in bulk. FACT: If it is wrapped in plastic it is not organic. SOLUTION: Enjoy locally grown produce. Low food miles = less pollution. FACT: Plastic bags suck. SOLUTION: A small reusable tote bag makes a huge difference. FACT: Dead batteries are very toxic and poison the earth. SOLUTION: Rechargeable batteries have a longer life span and are reusable. FACT: Households consume one-fifth of the United States energy each year. SOLUTION: If it is not in use, turn it off. FACT: More time in front of the TV means less time communicating. SOLUTION: Share more time with your family.
