Recycled Movie teaches students about solar-power & silk-screening at the East Hollywood Earth Day Festival. | |
 | In their first collaboration, Recycled Movie and the L.A. Conservation Corps joined forces at the East Hollywood Earth Day Festival, Saturday, April 24th. The Conservation Corps' "Clean and Green" team consisted of nine students ages 14-17, who assisted with recycling and waste management at the event. | | Recycled Movie founder Chase White taught the students about solar power by demonstrating the S.P.I.R.T. (Solar Powered Interactive Recycling Trailer). The S.P.I.R.T. uses three 100 Watt solar panels to charge an industrial sized deep cell battery; then, a 700 Watt inverter converts the stored 12V energy to 110 and is able to power 2 lcds monitors, speakers and lighting for the trailer. The lcd monitors are used to screen short films and public service announcements produced by recycled movie in collaboration with several different student groups. | | Next, the students learned to silk-screen, an artistic process which embosses images on blank shirts. By pressing ink through a pre-made screen with a squeegie, each student made several shirts with this year's winning Earth Day logo, the "Ying-Yang Earth," a symbol of balance, unity, peace and harmony. Shirts for this event were generously donated by American Apparel, and the mobile silk-screening station was provided courtesy of American Boutiques.
